Afrailado: traditional cultivation of Rioja Alavesa’s olive trees.

With afrailado the lower part of the tree is maintained without branches, to promote the development of the rest of the associated crops. The area of fruitful branches begins at a minimum height of 1.5 m from the ground. Producing a layer of approximately 1-2 m thick keeping the center of the tree unadorned. (hence the name of afrailado because its resemblance to this religious hair styles).

Yet there are some in associated farming, although the afrailado cultivation has given way to new pruning and maintenance systems.

Our extreme climate, cold in winter and dry in summer, also provides peculiarity to the olive cultivation in Rioja Alavesa.

Its annual development cycle is shorter than in large producing areas and its production is lower.

These elements affect the quality of our oils: intense, with an outstanding personality, powerful in mouth and with a long aftertaste. Which has a high content of oleic acid and natural antioxidants called polyphenols.
